Marijuana vs Alcohol: What will do more harm?
PROS AND CONS OF MARIJUANA VS ALCOHOL AND WHAT WILL DO YOU MORE HARM:
The history of marijuana goes back for thousands of years. It was only made illegal in many countries during the 20th century. Marijuana is the most commonly abused illegal substance worldwide. Marijuana is a plant or herb whose scientific name is Cannabis sativa or Cannabis Indica. Its leaves, seeds, stems, and/or roots are consumed by marijuana users for the purpose of getting high and having a different state of mind. It has chemicals called Cannabinoids that directly deal with your nervous system. The biggest concentration of cannabinoids can be found in its flowers and leaves which are the parts used to make medicinal remedies.
Some people use marijuana recreationally to create a sense of well-being or to alter the senses. It can be consumed by mouth or smoked/vaporized. Its effect starts almost immediately and last from 1 to 3 hours. It is consumed by mouth for medicinal causes. It is smoked for symptoms like nausea, glaucoma, hemorrhoids, anorexia, loss of appetite, fever, anxiety, depression and others. THC or tetrahydrocannabinol is used for prescription only, FDA-approved product Marinol, used for weight or appetite loss, nausea and vomiting on Cancer and AIDS patients. Cannabinoids are similar to the uses of codeine to treat pain.
MARIJUANA: NEGATIVE EFFECTS
Consuming Marijuana may cause problems with memory performance, psychomotor speed, short term memory problems, paranoia, impaired thinking, problems with coordination, hallucinations, panic, lung problems. If used at a young age it may stop brain development. The accepted impression is that marijuana is a harmless pleasure, therefore should not be regulated or considered illegal. Despite information regarding the addictiveness of marijuana, the evidence clearly states that long-term marijuana use can lead to addiction.
Alcohol is a drink that contains Ethanol, produced by yeast fermentation of sugars. It is classified as a legal and hypnotic sedative drug. It can be found in wines, beers and spirit drinks (whiskey, gin, rum, vodka, etc). It can depress the central nervous system when consumed in high doses. It affects a persons ability to control their behavior and even bodily functions.
Social drinking has a big role in society. If you go to a party or an event where there is alcohol, social drinking would come into place because you are drinking at a social, responsible level without getting intoxicated. Culturally, if you drink early on in your day, it is frowned upon. France, for example, is known for drinking wine with almost every meal. In Germany and United States it’s beer, Russia does vodka and so on for every culture. The occasional glass of wine during dinner is no cause for concern.
ALCOHOL: NEGATIVE EFFECTS
Drinking alcohol at excessive levels can cause problems like cancer, pancreatitis, sexual dysfunction, heart problems, liver disease and even death. It can make your speech slurry, and cause unsteady movements. Alcoholics tend to have problems with domestic violence, end relationships in divorce, have unemployment and even poverty.
If you are going to drink, it is advisable to know what you are drinking (components of your beverage) and its effects on your individual self. Having alcohol free days in your week might help too. On average, it takes about an hour for your body to assimilate alcohol. So give your body time to process the alcohol. If you find yourself drinking at an intoxicating level daily to forget problems or to cope with hard situations, then you could be at potential risk. If you lie about drinking, put yourself or others in physical danger, neglect responsibilities, become embarrassed or ashamed when people know you are drinking or start having legal issues, than that’s a huge red flag. If it’s causing you trouble on a day to day basis, then it has become a drinking problem. If you want to quit but find it impossible you might have to look for professional help.
Marijuana vs Alcohol: Conclusions
In my optimistic perception, Marijuana will get you high but will not change your personality nor make you violent towards others like alcohol may. Alcohol is a substance that can alter your senses without any recollection of damages, more than marijuana. Abusing either one can cause potential harm.
Comparative death data proves that alcohol kills more people annually than marijuana. Alcohol can become addictive. Marijuana helps people treat diseases, alcohol doesn’t do that. Alcohol is toxic, marijuana can be regenerative. Everything we consume, even food, should be done with measure. Nothing in excess is good. So be aware of benefits and negative effects of both Marijuana and Alcohol and make smart decisions that will not harm you or others in any way.
